From the classroom to the computer: Making the jump to e-learning.

Being a Teacher is my passion. It is what I pretended to be as a little girl, what I did to make money as an undergraduate student and what I eventually found a career in. Most teachers are not in it for the money, rather they are teachers because they are a special breed of human being that seeks to impart knowledge on others and in doing so feels the gratification of seeing a student make discoveries and change because of what they have learned. Being in the classroom allowed me to do this everyday but it also took something from my time, my energy and me. I was so devoted to teaching that it left very little time for my family. In April 2017 I discovered VIPKID and I haven’t ever looked back.

VIPKID provides an American elementary school style experience to children in China from the comfort of their home. For the teacher this also means that they too get to work from the comfort of their own home as well. My current “classroom” is pretty small. It consists of a color and shapes poster and of course, me! Check it out!

This is me in my classroom.

VIPKID has a scoped and sequenced curriculum based on the common core. Currently there are 6 levels. Level 1 is Pre-VIP and serves the youngest students ages 3-5 with parental assistance as needed. Levels 2-6 are for ages 5-12. Students are placed in a level based on a computer test and / or a trial class to determine what level is a good fit. The best part is that the teacher can create a personalized, joyful education experience all from the comfort of his or her own home!

William is a great example of a student who had made tremendous progress with just 1 year of courses. Check it out:

VIPKID was founded in 2013 and is growing at an exponential rate! At the time of this post there were over 20,000 teachers contracted with VIPKID! Parents in China like the  affordability and convenience as opposed to the cost of office tutoring. Teachers can enjoy a work from home rate of $14-$22 an hour based on their education and experience. It’s a win-win!

I was a skeptic at first. There are only a few work from home opportunities that actually leave you making a profit. Most “work from home” opportunities are direct sales and while some people do find success, oftentimes you are your own best customer. With VIPKID there is difference. You aren’t selling anything.  Simply put, you create your own schedule and parents book classes with you.  VIPKID pays you the contracted rate per each class once a month.

VIPKID has endorsements from Bloomberg, Forbes, TESOL International Association, Coursera and ETS the makers of the TOEFL Primary exam. Forbes rated VIPKID #5 in 2017 as one of the top 100 companies offering remote jobs. You can find the link to the Bloomberg article here

While the majority of the students enrolled in VIPKIDs curriculum are Chinese, there are students all over the world. I have taught students in Japan, France and even California!

VIPKID is based on the flipped classroom model. For traditional brick and mortar schoolteachers like myself, this concept is counterintuitive but for VIPKID students it is a brilliant approach and could work in just about any classroom with planning and a little ingenuity! It looks like this:

The best part for me is that I get to do what I love (teach), and there is no lesson panning or grading! Each week I have a new mix of regular students and new students. VIPKID also has a thriving online community and offers free professional development I can take advantage of at my convenience.
